Learn More About Walk with a Doc Hosted by New South Family Medicine
Fort Mill Now has attended the last two Walk with a Doc events, and we hope you'll join us for the next one on Dec. 2 at 6pm! They occur on the first Monday of the month, and it's a great way to get moving on a Monday, meet new people, chat with Dr. Jessica Mendelsohn, and learn more about Direct Primary Care.
Walkers should meet at 6pm below the New South Family Medicine office located in Kingsley Town Center, bundle up, and bring a flashlight or your phone to see. It's a quick one-mile loop around Kingsley Town Center so very doable with dogs or strollers. This family-friendly event welcomes all levels.
We asked Dr. Mendelsohn some questions to help folks understand the Walk with a Doc program a bit more:
Why do you host Walk with a Doc? What does it mean to you?
I learned about the Walk with a Doc (WWAD) program in late 2018 and knew it was something I wanted to implement at New South Family Medicine (NSFM). I am an avid exerciser and know what it feels like to be healthy. Part of why I wanted to open my own practice is because it allows me time with my patients to talk about not only disease, but also health and wellness. WWAD allows us to have this discussion WHILE we walk to improve the health of our community.
What's your favorite thing about the monthly Walk with a Doc?
I absolutely love working where I live. WWAD is a community event for anyone of any fitness level to participate in something healthy. At our last walk, we had multiple children and pets also participate! If we can empower one person to make strides to better health, it’s a win. I love connecting with and meeting new people – this allows me to do that in a healthy environment. I hope for WWAD to become a long-term commitment that grows through the years, therefore, contributing to a healthier Fort Mill.
What can attendees expect from the walk?
WWAD is for all fitness levels. One can walk as little or as long as they choose. We start the evening off with a basic health topic then, as a group, walk the mile loop around Kingsley Town Center. Part of what I want to do with WWAD is connect other small businesses in Fort Mill with the community. As often as I can, I plan to partner with like-minded business owners to engage with our walkers and discuss fitness, health, and events in the community. Expect fun additions in 2020, such as yoga stretching, barre warmups, and strength training!
Will you continue to host it during the winter months?
We definitely will! Last month our walk was the day after daylight savings. We bundled up, enjoyed the early nightfall, and walked safely with flashlights throughout Kingsley. If the weather is heavy rain or lightning, the walk will be postponed. Otherwise, we will be out there! Updates on the walk can be found on our Instagram and Facebook pages as well in the events tab on our website.
