Local music therapy practice continues services: the beat goes on

This is part of our Community series. Submit your story here.

A locally owned and operated private practice and studio continues to connect with clients and students through virtual options since March 16, 2020. Piedmont Music Therapy, LLC is staffed by board certified music therapists with an intern studying music therapy at Queens University of Charlotte. They offer specialized services for clients of varying diagnoses and conditions. Plus, they provide traditional and adapted lessons on voice, strings and percussion instruments. Due to safety restrictions, nearly all of their group contracts in the community have halted. A few proceed with prerecorded sessions but the majority have not been able to receive telehealth appointments remotely.

To assist with operating costs, PMT has set up a process for welcoming new students for virtual lessons and is accepting new clients for individual treatment as of March 30, 2020.

Their new e-courses for playing the ukulele from home and crafting DIY musical instruments is a great option to support this local business. PMT is passionate about connecting individuals of all abilities to the arts so they’ve offered a free streamed event via Facebook LIVE three weeks now with plans to continue during this stressful time. Additionally they’ve begun offering a compiled listing of daily events that creative and expressive arts therapy practices are offering remotely. With summer camp season being one of their busiest seasons, they welcome support of streaming events for individuals via PayPal linked on their website and will begin offering video tutorials on their YouTube Channel.

Music therapists in the area have adapted to the safety guidelines since many clients served are immune compromised. It has been an adjustment because of sound effects through a virtual platform but the Staff at PMT have utilized collegial support from board certified music therapists all over the country to make the most out of the daily factors. During this tense time, we are grateful for each note that we can continue with clients for connecting, playing and growing. Local sites having to cease services include St John's United Methodist Church Preschool in Rock Hill, Wellmore of Tega Cay, and Spirited Sprout Play in Waxhaw to name a few.
