Local Dentist Opens Startup with Focus on Community

General Dentist Katie Macken recently opened Orchard Grove Family Dentistry in Fort Mill. After practicing in the Charlotte area since 2013, and seeing corporate owned offices popping up all around, Dr. Macken decided it was time to start her own.
She said, “I’ve worked in a dental office since I was 15; I had to do my part to keep private practice dentistry alive.”
She envisions an office that develops long term relationships with patients and the community through a consistent, non-judgmental team, relaxing environment, and straightforward options for treatment and payment presented in a way that everyone can understand. She said, “Working in the field so long, I’ve had some amazing mentors and some great examples of both what works and what doesn’t.”
The office was designed to be a welcoming environment and reduce anxiety with calming colors, natural textures, and air filtering plants. Additional anxiety reducing amenities such as weighted blankets and noise cancelling headphones are also available.
Orchard Grove Family Dentistry has partnered with Charlotte based Foundation for Girls. The organization provides financial coaching, career training, and social connections for homeless single mothers in the greater Charlotte area. Owner Dr. Macken, a mom to two young children, said: “Parenting is hard- even if you are fortunate to have a support system. I can’t imagine doing it alone. When I read about Foundation For Girls, the mission, the backstory- I knew I wanted my business to support that.” For every five new patients seen at Orchard Grove Family Dentistry, the practice provides a care pack to a homeless mother and child. Care packs include items like clothing, personal care supplies, and nutritionally dense snacks for mom and child.
