Piedmont Medical Center – Fort Mill is proud to announce the construction of a new Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), expanding access to specialized care for families in Fort Mill and the surrounding communities.

Located within The Nest, the hospital’s modern, family-friendly Labor & Delivery unit, the approximately 4,000-square-foot NICU is designed with both patient and family comfort in mind. The unit will feature private, thoughtfully designed spaces to support newborns and their loved ones during critical care.
Key Features of the New NICU
Twelve total beds: five Level III NICU beds and seven Level II continuing care beds
24/7 neonatology coverage
Specialty-trained NICU nurses
Neonatal-trained respiratory therapists
“This expansion allows us to bring highly specialized neonatal care closer to home for families in Fort Mill and the surrounding communities,” said Chris Mitchell, CEO of PMC - Fort Mill. “Our team of board-certified physicians and nurses is ready to provide expert care when it’s needed most.”
Teresa Urquhart, Market CEO of Piedmont Medical Center, added: “By expanding women’s and children’s services and offering advanced birthing and neonatal care locally, we are reinforcing our mission to deliver high-quality, compassionate care where it’s needed most. The addition of this Level III NICU strengthens our ability to provide comprehensive, advanced neonatal care for every family.”

The new NICU is expected to open in Spring 2026, and Piedmont Medical Center plans to share updates on construction progress and key milestones as the project develops.
Families and community members can look forward to a state-of-the-art space designed to combine advanced medical care with comfort and support for both babies and parents.
